Inka: A Fusion of Japanese and Peruvian Culinary Artistry
Located in the heart of Canberra Civic, Inka is an exceptional dining destination that seamlessly blends Japanese Nikkei cuisine with the vibrant flavours of Peruvian gastronomy.
The interior design, conceptualised by Patricia Barbis—a renowned Lima- and New York-based interior designer and architect—draws inspiration from the distinctive blend of Japanese and Peruvian influences found in Peru’s culinary culture. The space evokes a sense of heritage, seamlessly integrating cultural symbolism, textiles, and vibrant colours to create a visually captivating environment.
Striking lanterns are suspended dramatically from the double-height ceiling, while figurine statues, sourced directly from Peru, span an entire feature wall. A large quipu—a traditional knotted fabric used by the indigenous peoples of the Andes for recording and conveying information—cascades elegantly over the staircase leading to the mezzanine level.
Thoughtfully curated dim and moody lighting accentuates the statues, casting evocative shadows that enhance the space’s ambience.
The lighting plays a pivotal role in shaping the atmosphere, elevating the dining experience by merging the lively essence of South America with the refined sophistication of Japanese fine dining. Lighting design studio Electrolight meticulously crafted a scheme that harmonises with the restaurant’s aesthetic, balancing vibrancy with intimacy—a defining characteristic of high-end Japanese dining establishments.
The integration of Onir LED linear lighting throughout the space enhances its architectural features, creating a seamless interplay between illumination and design. Subtle lighting highlights the staircase, drawing attention to its sculptural form, while concealed linear profiles under the bar add depth and contrast. The statuettes on the shelving are dramatically lit by the integrated lighting, casting intricate shadows that further enrich the ambience, and in the bathrooms, soft LED illumination behind the mirrors extends the moody atmosphere, ensuring a cohesive lighting experience throughout the venue. Through its bold yet elegant design, Inka has established itself as a culinary and cultural landmark, where art, gastronomy, and lighting design converge to create an unforgettable experience.
